Thank you to all those who donated! WMS donated 55 bags of groceries to the Food Bank!
Dear parents,
To respond to an emergency need for food at the New Milford Food Bank that was reported in the local papers, the WMS outreach committee is holding a food drive. The food drive will be held from October 8th to the 15th. Dry goods, canned goods and toiletries, and/or cash are desired. See below for a more detailed list.
We have managed to weave this drive into the curriculum of the middle school via Life Skills teacher Theo Grayson who is helping by connecting the drive to lessons on nutrition she will be holding. We will also be looking to the middle schoolers for ideas on posters to advertise the drive, food collecting or help delivering the food. The middle school will have a competition per classroom to see which class can collect the most food. The New Milford food bank delivers a bag of groceries to about 80 households per week.
Food Bank Information:
The New Milford Food Bank provides assistance to families and
individuals from New Milford in need of food. This program enables
New Milford's Department of Social Services to provide a bag of
non-perishable groceries to approximately 70 – 80 local households per week. Staples such as pasta and sauce, peanut butter and jelly, cereal, soups, canned meats, veggies and fruit, and toiletries are given. This little helping hand assists low-income people to stretch their budgets and make ends meet. Many are working families with young children, but struggle to afford food after paying rent, utilities and other fixed costs. In addition, the Food Bank provides emergency food vouchers for fresh foods when funds are available.
Given our volume of food distribution, we are very grateful for
community support. This program is fully supported by private
donations and volunteer labor. Thank you for your interest. Our
office is located at 40 Main Street, 2nd floor. The phone number is
355-6079.
